Fixed space maintainers: These are permanent appliances that are bonded to the teeth. They usually contain bands, wires, or cast parts.

Movable space maintainer: Removable. Can be used if the child's cooperation is good.

When Should They Be Placed?

If a primary tooth is lost early and there's still time for the permanent tooth to appear, they should be placed shortly after the tooth is extracted to prevent the adjacent teeth from shifting.

When Is It Removed?

It's removed when the permanent tooth emerges from the bottom. Your dentist will determine this time during regular checkups.
