Gingivectomy / Gingivoplasty

Gingivectomy / Gingivoplasty

Gingivectomy is the surgical removal of excess gum tissue by cutting and shaping the gums. It can be performed for aesthetic or therapeutic purposes. Gingivectomy is performed to remove infected gum tissue in cases of gum disease, to level the gums in cases of excessive gum display (gummy smile), or to correct gum overgrowth due to any other cause . Under local anesthesia, the gums are removed with a scalpel or laser, revealing healthy gum tissue. If any gum pockets are present, these pockets are reduced, resulting in a more aesthetically pleasing gumline.

Gingivoplasty, on the other hand, involves shaping the gums. Unlike a gingivectomy, healthy gum tissue is not excised; only the contours of the existing tissue are adjusted. Gingivoplasty is generally performed for aesthetic purposes. It is used to treat situations such as a gummy smile, short teeth, and asymmetrical gum contours.
