Frenectomy

Frenectomy

The frenulum is the structure located between the gums and the tongue, lips, and cheeks, limiting the movement of these tissues. A frenectomy is the removal of the frenulum.

In What Cases Should It Be Done?

A diastema can occur when a frenulum is thicker or larger than normal between the upper and lower teeth. In this case, a frenectomy is necessary. It can also cause gum recession and gum disease by pulling downward. A thick or large frenulum, located under the tongue, can cause speech problems in children.

How Is Frenectomy Performed?

It can be removed quickly and without bleeding using a laser under local anesthesia. If the tumor is deep or very large, it is surgically removed and stitched. The stitches are removed after one week, leaving no scar.
